Why does the message "This device has exceeded the 1-year software maintenance period and is not eligible for firmware update" continue to appear when attempting to perform a local firmware update on RX420(RDP), RX440(RDP), or RX-RDP+ thin clients?

Why does the message "This device has exceeded the 1-year software maintenance period and is not eligible for firmware update" continue to appear when attempting to perform a local firmware update on RX420(RDP), RX440(RDP), or RX-RDP+ thin clients?

If you encounter the following message while attempting a local firmware update on an RX420(RDP), RX440(RDP), or RX-RDP+ thin client, please continue reading for further information.

For brevity, “thin client device” in this article refers to any RX420(RDP), RX440(RDP) or RX-RDP+.

To troubleshoot the issue, please follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that you have a valid device AMP license correctly assigned to the thin client device. For detailed procedures, please refer to this knowledge base article.
  2. Once you have confirmed step 1, check the current firmware version installed on the thin client device for which you intend to perform a local firmware update:

a.      If the firmware version is 2.4.5 or higher:

                                                    i.     Make sure the thin client device is connected to the Internet before initiating a reboot. The thin client device will attempt to contact the NComputing Management Portal to retrieve its current AMP license status. Please wait at least 1-minute before attempting to perform a local firmware update to the latest version (e.g., 4.5.3).

b.      If the firmware version is 1.12.8 or lower:

                                                    i.     Perform a local firmware update to an intermediate RX version 2.4.5. You can find the download link for version 2.4.5 below. The firmware update process will automatically reboot the thin client device.

ii.     Once the thin client device is upgraded to 2.4.5, connect it to the Internet and perform another reboot. The device will attempt to contact the NComputing Management Portal. Please wait at least 1-minute before attempting to perform a local firmware update to the latest version (e.g., 4.5.3).

Note: RX firmware version 2.4.5 is the initial version which supports local firmware update without the need to use PMC Endpoint Manager with a valid device AMP license.
