VERDE 8.3.4.n Installation Guide

VERDE 8.3.4.n Installation Guide

Scope

The following installation guide is applicable to VERDE versions 8.3.4.0 and 8.3.4.1. It is expected that the person executing this installer has a working knowledge of Linux commands.

Overview

The Verde installer (VI) is a bash script with the embedded modules that allow the easy install, reinstall, configuration of Verde and Postgres DB.
The installer script file is named verde-installer.sh. The verde-installer.sh script must be in same folder as the unpacked Verde packages (RPMs or DEBs).
The installer’s UI it is a pseudo terminal UI that is used to display system output or messages from commands executed by the script. These are not necessarily errors but standard behavior of such application.
The installer should have access to the internet to download needed utilities from the host operating system (CentOS/Ubuntu) repositories as needed.

Executing the Installer

To execute the installer: (note: server is the computer system that VERDE is to be installed)
  1. Connect to the server using standard SSH connection or directly access the server. To avoid permission issues you should use a root level user.
  2. Unpack the VERDE distribution file. (VERDE distribution files are “.zip” files)
  3. Change the current directory to the folder created by the unpacking. You should see verde-installer.sh along with other files.
  4. You may need to add the executable flag to verde-installer.sh: e.g., chmod +x ./verde-installer.sh
  5. To start the installer:  ./verde-installer.sh
  6. Complete all steps until the process has been completed.
  7. If any errors occurred, please contact NComputing support for assistance.
There are two installation methods:

Automatic Installation Method

All components, DB configuration and Verde configuration will be executed with the default recommended settings with the minimal actions from user side.
Important: Cluster installation without a separate DB server, for CM and CMC should be installed only in the automatic method, to correctly configure shared DB and DB management functionality. Do not use the manual method to avoid errors when changing CMC role to CM.

Manual Installation Method

Only use this method if you have advanced knowledge of VERDE or are provided with explicit instructions from NComputing. This method allows the user to manually configure all settings. It is not recommended for typical installations.

Executing Automatic Method Installation

Components that will be installed in this method:
  1. DB server – Postgres server v15.
  2. Verde packages

Installation UI and steps:

If installer was launched as non-administrator in the desktop version of the OS you will be prompted to authenticate privileges to system administrator by asking the for the root user password:

If you are using the command line server mode the root user should be used to invoke the installer script:

Initial step is to select the installation method. The following uses the Automatic method.
Type ENTER or use TAB to switch to button section to select OK. Click CANCEL to terminate process.
After selecting OK installation of dependency and utilities needed for the installer and DB server begins:

Next step is to set the password for the postgres user for the newly installed database.
Important: the postgres user has full access to all DB components, databases, other users and objects. It is recommended to set a safe and secure password.

Database configuration is automatically completed.

Next step is to select the Verde server role

Select desired role and press ENTER or by TAB move to OK button
Next step is assignment of the Public IP address of the Verde server:

Important: for clustered server do not use the same FQDN name that will be selected for different cluster node (such as localhost, 127.0.0.1 and so on). Public IP address must be visible for all nodes in the cluster and unique in the configured cluster.

Next is final installation and configuration of the Verde server.

If installation completed without errors the following results are displayed:

Important: if you configured that cluster in the automatic mode do not change the DB settings and location of the DB files.
The DB folder for the cluster in the Automatic mode is: /home/vb-verde/pgsql/15/data

Installation is complete:

Verde is ready for use:

Installing the Cluster Master Candidate (CMC) or VDI only server

Installation steps for the CMC or VDI only server should be done after CM is installed:
Mount the shared folder to have same as CM.
Start the installer script and select only automatic mode.

If CM is already installed it will be detected and inform you as shown above.
Installation of required dependencies and utilities for the database engine and Verde

As the database was previously configured during CM installation you are only prompted to configure access in the Firewall. Select Yes if you don’t need a specific configuration.

Select server mode, for the CMC or VDI only

Set public IP for the server.

Installation of Verde

After installation has completed:

Now CM and CMC or VDI servers are configured and ready for using

General Tips

Server time zone must be UTC for Scheduled Launch

Please set the time zone for your VERDE servers to UTC to ensure predictable results when using Scheduled Launch.

We recommend a minimum of 4GB of RAM be selected when using Windows 10 Guest OS. It is technically possible to launch a Windows 10 Guest session with 2GB of RAM. However, problems have been observed during certain events including Windows 10 OS updates from Microsoft and VERDE Guest Tool updates during upgrade migration from previous versions of VERDE.

Apply all Windows Updates before check-in

When building a Gold Image for all versions of Windows (7/10/11), it is good practice to be sure to apply all Windows Updates before completing the check-in process. It is also highly recommended to disable automatic Windows updates before checking in the Gold Image.
If this is not complete, then there is a chance that normal users will experience automated Windows Update during normal session launch. This puts an unnecessary heavy load on the server to support many updates requests simultaneously.

Windows 10/11 License Activation

When building a Gold Image based on Windows 10/11: You must login as mcadmin1 (before check-in), activate Windows and create local users. There is a significant difference between Windows 7 and Windows 10/11: Windows 10/11 uses scsi and virtio drivers in normal work mode, so if you activate Windows 10/11 before these drivers start to work then Windows sees significant hardware changes and requires activation again. Therefore, the proper sequence for Windows 10/11:
  1. Complete the Windows 10/11 installation
  2. Install all VERDE guest tools
  3. The Gold Image will automatically shut down after completion of guest tool installation
  4. Re-connect to the Gold Image using the admin user
  5. Enter the Windows license key to activate (add any local users at this time)
  6. Shut down the image
  7. Check-in

Using the REVERT or DELETE function for Gold Images

Gold image sessions should always be shut down before attempting to Revert or Delete the gold image. This may result in the inability to delete or access the Gold Image.
A function has been made available to resolve this.  Please see the following Knowledge Base Article:
