Device AMP License Calculator Guide

Device AMP License Calculator Guide

Overview

Please read

The Device AMP licensing system has two complementary tools. While both tools work toward the goal of simplifying Device AMP renewal management, they serve different purposes and are typically used at different stages of the licensing process:

Device AMP License Calculator – Used before purchasing licenses to determine how many Device AMP seats are required to align eligible devices to a common expiration date. It's important to differentiate this particular tool, is about forecasting, planning and purchasing smartly. This is what this article is about.

Device AMP Allocation Tool – Used after licenses have been purchased or redeemed to assign Device AMP coverage to devices using either Full-Seat Allocation or Shared (Pro-Rated) Allocation. We have a separate article for this.

About the Device Allocation Tool

The Device AMP License Calculator is a planning tool available within the NComputing Store that helps determine how many Device AMP licenses should be purchased to align all eligible devices to a common expiration date.

Rather than manually calculating renewals for individual devices, the calculator analyzes your existing Device AMP licensing and estimates the number of additional one-year Device AMP licenses required to achieve a desired fleet-wide expiration date.

The calculator does not allocate licenses. Instead, it recommends the number of licenses required based on your current environment. After purchasing and redeeming the recommended licenses, they can be applied using the Device AMP Allocation Tool available in the My Licenses section of the Management Portal.

Before You Begin

Before using the Device AMP License Calculator:

  • Devices must already be registered in the NComputing Management Portal.
  • Devices should be connected and online so the Management Portal has current licensing information.
  • Keep in mind that only devices compatible to receive Device AMP licensing benefits are included in the calculation.

Accessing the Device AMP License Calculator

  1. Log in to the NComputing Management Portal.
  2. Click Purchase Licenses and Services.

  1. Inside the NComputing Store, select Device AMP License Calculator from the left navigation pane.

The calculator page will display your current Device AMP licensing information.

Understanding the Device AMP License Calculator

When the calculator opens, it automatically evaluates your registered devices and displays a summary of your current licensing status.

The information displayed includes:

  • The total number of eligible devices.
  • Device current expiration dates, earliest or latest.

This information is used to determine how many additional licenses may be required to reach a common renewal date.

Understanding the Device List

The table displayed below the calculator lists every eligible device included in the calculation.

For each device you can view:

  • Serial Number
  • Registration Date
  • Current Device AMP Expiration Date

This allows administrators to verify which devices are contributing to the licensing calculation.

Choosing a Desired Expiration Date

Select the desired Device AMP expiration date using the drop-down calendar.

For example: December 31, 2026

This represents the renewal date you would like all eligible devices to share after additional licensing is purchased and allocated.

Notes
Important: Device Pagination Affects Visibility
A common source of confusion involves the device table pagination control located in the lower-right corner of the page. By default, only 10 devices are displayed.
Available options include: 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 to be displayed at once in the page. If your environment contains more than 10 devices, you should increase the page size before reviewing selections.

Why This Matters
Suppose 13 devices are eligible, but only 10 devices are currently visible in the webpage. Since you cannot see beyond the 10 selected, you may unintentionally compute licensing to only a portion of the whole environment.
Increasing the visibility of units in the webpage, will display your complete device inventory and allow you to verify which devices are included in the calculation.

Calculating Required Licenses

After selecting the desired expiration date, click Calculate.

The calculator evaluates:

  • The number of eligible devices
  • Current Device AMP expiration dates
  • Existing Device AMP value already assigned to devices
  • The desired renewal date

The system then calculates the minimum number of whole one-year Device AMP licenses required to reach, or slightly exceed, the selected expiration date

Notes
FYI: The Device AMP License Calculator is designed around one-year Device AMP licenses.
While the calculator can estimate the number of one-year licenses required for a unified renewal date, multi-year Device AMP subscriptions (such as 3-year or 5-year licenses) cannot be prorated. Multi-year subscriptions already include discounted pricing and therefore cannot be divided into smaller licensing values.

Understanding the Results

After the calculation completes, the Store will display:

  • The recommended quantity of Device AMP licenses
  • The estimated fleet-wide expiration date after allocation

Notes
Because Device AMP licenses are sold as whole seats, the calculated expiration date may extend slightly beyond the date originally selected. This behavior is expected, since fractional licenses cannot be purchased. Therefore, the calculator recommends the nearest whole-license quantity capable of reaching the requested date.

Remove Devices You No Longer Use

Only active devices should remain registered in the Management Portal.
If devices have been retired, replaced, or permanently removed from service, deregister them before calculating Device AMP requirements.
Removing unused devices reduces the number of licenses required and helps avoid unnecessary renewal costs.
💡 Tip: Use the Deregister function from the My Devices section of the Management Portal to remove devices that are no longer in service.
Warning⚠️Use caution! Deregistering a device will remove it from being listed active in your Management Portal account, and any remaining licensing associated to such device will be lost. This process is not reversible!

What Happens Next?

The Device AMP License Calculator only determines how many licenses should be purchased.

After completing your purchase:

  1. Redeem the Device AMP license key (if applicable).
  2. Open My Licenses.
  3. Select Allocate.
  4. Using the Device AMP License Allocation Tool, apply the licenses using either:
    • Full-Seat Allocation, or
    • Shared Allocation (Pro-Rated)

Best Practices

To obtain the most accurate calculation:

  • Ensure all devices are currently reporting to the Management Portal.
  • Remove devices that are no longer in use before calculating.
  • Select a realistic renewal date that aligns with your maintenance schedule.
  • Remember that your purchase of Device AMP licenses must be the one-year part number. This is the only allowed type of license in the Device AMP License Allocation Tool.
  • Remember that calculations are based on your current environment. Adding or removing devices after the calculation may change the final allocation results.
Frequently Asked Questions. Click here to expand.

Why doesn't the calculated expiration date exactly match the date I selected?

Device AMP licenses are sold as whole one-year seats. Since fractional licenses cannot be purchased, the calculator recommends the nearest whole-license quantity that reaches or slightly exceeds the requested date.

Does the calculator purchase licenses automatically?

No. The calculator only estimates the number of Device AMP licenses required. Purchasing licenses is a separate step.

Does the calculator allocate licenses?

No. License allocation is performed later from the My Licenses section using the Device AMP Allocation Tool.

Why did my required license count change?

The calculation is based on your current device inventory and licensing status. Registering new devices, deregistering existing devices, or changes to current Device AMP expiration dates will affect future calculations.

Conclusion

The Device AMP Calculator is used to forecast and purchase Device AMP licenses for coverage to your eligible devices.
