Windows Server 2012: Remote Desktop Licensing Server Configuration

About this article

This will be a helpful guide to assist you with setting up your licensing server.

When setting up a Microsoft Windows, Server Operating System, you will see the requirement of configuring an activate a Licensing Server within a 120-day grace period. Typically, this will be announced to you during this lapse of time through a warning in the System Tray.

A new Microsoft Update now requires that User CALS are installed for Server 2012 and Server 2016.

Procedure

Please download and read the attached PDF guide, which provides detailed steps for configuring a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Licensing Server.  Please notice that this document is highly technical and it is recommended to be used by qualified IT that is familiar with this setup.

When using the NComputing platform over Microsoft Server operating systems, make sure to configure your licensing server licenses as "per user" and not "per device".

Additional Information

• About finding out the purpose and function of the licensing server.
Here is a helpful guide.

• About how to use the Server Manager to set the Remote Desktop Licensing mode for Windows Server 2012 RDS deployment. This article can be helpful.

• If you see a Windows Warning: "You are current logged on as local administrator on the computer. You must be logged on as a domain user to manage servers and collections." See this link.

Again, please notice that the referenced links lead to highly technical information, helpful to qualified IT.

We have also verified that this method applies as well to Windows Server 2016 and has not changed much from the Server 2008 R2 steps.
