The RX420(vSpace) thin client, built on the Raspberry Pi 4B platform with 2GB RAM, now supports dual-user mode for vSpace Pro Enterprise deployments. Designed for high-performance virtual desktops, it delivers a seamless PC-like experience with full-screen, full-motion HD multimedia playback, dual-band WiFi (5 GHz/2.4 GHz), Gigabit Ethernet, and transparent USB redirection with peripheral support.
Administrators can easily configure and manage RX420(vSpace) devices using vSpace Console, which enables centralized deployment, provisioning, and template-based configuration. Additionally, devices can be remotely managed over local and wide-area networks using the optional PMC Endpoint Manager, available to AMP for vSpace Pro subscribers.

The RX420(vSpace) device requires a separate purchase of AMP for vSpace Pro to receive the PMC software license for that device.
The RX420(vSpace) devices can be easily configured using PMC Endpoint Manager software. An admin can remotely manage RX420(vSpace) devices over local and wide-area networks, including locations behind firewalls and NAT-routers through an easy-to-use, web-based user interface.
PMC comes with automatic discovery, check-in, and configuration provisioning of new devices, making the deployment easy. Administrators can setup device profiles with all settings and configurations, then assign the profiles to groups of devices. Only a few clicks are needed to schedule device firmware updates, access the summary dashboard or view the detailed event logging. Users are always up-to-date with the latest technology.
About this 3.8.5 official release:
The 3.8.5 version is an official release for RX420(vSpace), which replaces the 3.8.0 (previous official release) and earlier versions with enhancements and bug fixes.
Enhancements in version 3.8.5:
- Updated Raspberry Pi firmware and kernel.
- Enhanced Wi-Fi scan combo box to auto-select based on matching SSID and connected AP MAC address.
- Sorted time zone listing in the proper order, based on UTC offsets and display names.
- Show Wi-Fi AP MAC address in the top-right Wi-Fi icon when verbose logs are enabled.
- Updated vCAST software component for vSpace.
Issues fixed in version 3.8.5:
- RXFOURVSP-170 – Fixed a bug that incorrectly allowed clipboard sharing between users in vSpace Dual User mode.

New features introduced in firmware version 3.8.0:
- Support for the enhanced ‘UXP Turbo’ protocol with the advanced H.264 codec in vSpace sessions (requires vSpace Pro Enterprise version 12.9.2 or higher), delivering improved compression, reduced bandwidth usage, and lower latency, making it ideal for:
- vSpace Server access over WAN or VPN
- Applications requiring low network latency, such as CAD systems which need to render and animate 3D objects.
The UXP Turbo with the H.264 support in vSpace brings next-generation performance for vSpace Pro Enterprise servers running on Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2022, or Windows Server 2025.
NOTE: The 'UXP Turbo' protocol with H.264 support is available only in single-user mode (with single or dual display) on the RX420(vSpace).
Enhancements in version 3.8.0:
- Reduced the full software image size by 50%.
- New options in RX420(vSpace) connection settings to enable/disable ‘UXP Turbo protocol’ and ‘H.264 decoding’ capabilities.
These options provide the flexibility of being able to globally enable the H.264 encoding in vSpace Server (requiring higher CPU/GPU load), but disable the H.264 support on selected clients when not required.
Issues fixed in version 3.8.0:
- RXFOURVSP-154– Fixed an issue where the dual display mirror configuration did not function correctly when the primary and secondary displays had different resolutions.
- RXFOURVSP-146 – Resolved a slow window refresh issue for the second user when using analog audio output.
Firmware Update Instructions
The firmware update (including the download of firmware package) can take a few minutes. Please do not turn off your device during this time. Once the firmware update is complete, the device will reboot automatically.
- Updating the firmware locally
The device firmware can be updated manually from the Setup GUI with a firmware update package uploaded to an FTP or a web server or from a locally connected USB memory stick:
- For FTP or web server (URL):
- Upload the ‘rx4x0-vsp-3.8.5.upd’ firmware update package file into your FTP or web server.
- On the RX420(vSpace) device open the Setup GUI and go to the ‘Support’ section.
- Enter the FTP or HTTP URL of the firmware update package and click the ‘Update’ button.
- Alternatively, user can use the following NComputing’s web URL to download and install this version of firmware directly to the RX420(vSpace) device.
- For a locally connected USB memory stick:
- Download the ‘rx4x0-vsp-3.8.5.upd’ and save it to a USB memory stick.
- Insert the USB stick to RX420(vSpace)
- On the RX420(vSpace) device, open the Setup GUI and go to the ‘Support’ section.
- Select ‘Update from the USB memory stick’ radio-button, select the firmware update file displayed in the pop-up, and click the ‘Update button’.
Once the device finishes downloading the firmware update package, the firmware update process will start and will take a while (around half a minute). The process should not be interrupted. Firmware update will end with a device reboot.
- Updating firmware from PMC
The RX420(vSpace) device requires a separate purchase of AMP for vSpace Pro to receive the PMC software license for that device.
Once PMC is registered to NComputing Management Portal, it will auto-detect the PMC licensing allowance for NComputing thin clients, including RX420(vSpace) devices that have been connected to PMC.
To ensure smooth transition and uninterrupted management ability, NComputing suggests updating PMC to version 4.2 (or newer) before upgrading the device firmware. Please refer to PMC 4.2 Release Notes for the information about PMC updating. To add to PMC the support for RX420(vSpace) devices with version 3.8.5 using device configuration version 21, an appropriate PCU file (PMC Configuration Update file) needs to be uploaded to PMC.
The device firmware can be updated from any version of PMC. Follow the below steps to perform the firmware update on remote RX420(vSpace) devices:
- Logon to PMC as a user with administrative privileges, open the Menu, go to ‘Administration > Files’.
- Select ‘Firmware Image’ as file type.
- Click the ‘Choose file’ button and select the ‘rx4x0-vsp-3.8.5.upd’ file.
- Click the ‘Upload file’ button to upload the firmware package.
- In PMC 4.2 or newer:
- Open the Menu, go to ‘Devices’.
- Select the devices which should receive the firmware update.
- Execute the ‘Update Firmware’ task of the Devices list.
- Select the ‘rx4x0-vsp-3.8.5.upd’ firmware package.
- Schedule the update date and time or opt to update now.
- Click the ‘Apply’ button.
If ‘Update now’ was chosen, then within 30 seconds the device will receive a request to initiate the firmware update. For remote devices the process can be followed by observing the Audit Events log on Dashboard. The firmware update process will take a while and should not be interrupted. Firmware update will end with a device reboot.
Additional notes
Basic connection setup:
- By default, the RX420(vSpace) device is configured to dual-user mode. It can switch to single-user mode with native dual display support.

- By default, the 'Cache selected vSpace Server address’ parameter is enabled (see above). This option will allow the admin to select a vSpace Server listed in the vSpace login page (screenshot below), click on 'Select' and the vSpace server will be cached and will be used for all subsequent connections.

- Then upon every device reboot, it will automatically bring user #1 and #2 to a familiar login page (similar to MX100). See screenshot below. If later on they want to change the 'cached vSpace server address' to a different one, user#1 simply clicks on 'Cancel' to bring back to the vSpace server listing menu. See screenshot below.

Advanced connection setup:
- vSpace server auto-connect:
The feature can be configured with the following:
- Step 1: create Server Group(s) and define vSpace server(s) for this particular Server Group.

- Step 2: Enable ‘Connect automatically’ and select the ‘Server Group’ defined in step 1 which the admin wants the device to auto-connect to. Upon device boots up, it will automatically bring user#1 and user#2 to the Window login screen of the selected vSpace server.

- Kiosk mode can be further configured to allow user#1 and user#2 directly login to his/her associated Window desktops, after the admin has setup the previous vSpace server auto-connect mode. The admin can pre-populate the Window username, password and Domain for user#1 and user#2 (screenshot below). Furthermore, the admin can optionally specify if there is any particular Windows application that should be auto launched once the user logs into the Windows desktop. Upon the device boots up, it will automatically connect to the designed vSpace server and automatically logs in user#1 and user#2 to the predefined vSpace sessions.

- Enable UXP Turbo Protocol (with H.264)
- In enable a vSpace session using the UXP Turbo protocol with H.264 support, the vSpace Pro Enterprise Server must have the UXP Turbo (H.264 option) enabled for encoding.
- On the RX420(vSpace) device, select single user mode by unchecking the ‘Enable dual-user mode’ option. Then, select ‘Enable UXP Turbo protocol’ and ‘Enable H.264 support’ options. See the screenshot below:
