(New 9-28-2016) Microsoft KB3181988: vSpace Host Freezes, or Devices will not connect (UPDATED 3/29/17)

This article is for customers who may be experiencing the following issues on Server 2008 R2, vSpace Server deployments:
  • Host freezes and needs to be rebooted for recovery when vSpace starts.
  • Host freezes and doesn't allow and NComputing devices or software to get a session.
We have had reports of the Microsoft update KB3181988 potentially causes failures in some environments using Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 and vSpace 6 or vSpace 8.3. while having USB devices in use.

KB3181988 is only in the Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 operating systems and therefor do not exist in Server 2012 or Server 2016.

It looks like it is part of an update/change to the usbhub.sys file in Windows.

Workaround options:
  • You can remove the Microsoft KB3181988 from Windows on the host server and reboot. Make sure you have this KB excluded from any further MS updates or it will be installed again.
  • Or, Install vSpace 8.4 or vSpace 10 Pro, available in the download center here.   You will need to login to the website for access.      It has been verified by QA that neither the vSpace 8.4 or vSpace 10 Pro versions are affected by this Microsoft update.

UPDATE 3-29-2017:
Recent Customer reports indicate this Microsoft Kb has been included in the recent cumulative update. The best practice suggestion is to upgrade to the latest vSpace version.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue.

Thank you for your continued patience.
