This document contains important information. Please read the entire document to ensure that your deployment process goes smoothly.

About the Product:

The L400 device is a next-generation thin client for vSpace Pro, succeeding the wildly popular L300 and L350 models. Visually, the L400 maintains the same construct as the earlier models but with updated connection ports, internals, and an expanded feature set.

The thin client is specifically designed and optimized for NComputing vSpace Pro servers and comes with a perpetual vSpace connection license. Built on the low-power quadcore ARM architecture platform, the L400 features full-screen, Quad-HD (2560x1440) multimedia playback, and transparent USB redirection; the virtualized PC experience is seamless. 

The L400 unlocks two of the best advancements made in vSpace Pro over the years - vCAST Streaming and UXP Turbo. vCAST reduces server-side CPU usage when streaming media, both from sources like YouTube and local media content, all without requiring expensive GPUs. The results are smooth media streaming, lower network traffic, and reduced server CPU usage allowing for more concurrent users per server. UXP Turbo further enhances the desktop experience for 3D rendering, browser scrolling, video playback and multimedia-intensive applications that can take advantage of host systems with supported graphic cards.

The L400 supports transparent redirection of various USB peripheral devices, including mass storage devices, printers, smart card readers, headsets or speakers, webcams, signature pads and COM ports, in addition to the standard keyboard and mouse.

The L400 is easy to configure and automatically receives updates from vSpace Pro servers. vSpace Console, the device management portion of vSpace Pro, allows easy configuration and updates of devices. Manage and monitor your classrooms, sessions, and users in real time. With just a few clicks, administrators may define device setting templates and apply them to selected devices or hundreds at a time.

Subscribers to vSpace Pro AMP will also have access to PMC Endpoint Manager. This web-based tool can remotely manage NComputing thin clients over local and wide-area networks, including locations behind firewalls and NAT routers.

About this release (version 1.3.0):

1.3.0 is an official maintenance update release that incorporates all the updates from 1.2.35 and earlier versions, along with new features, enhancements and bug fixes.

New product features introduced in L400 version 1.3.0

•  Support for the enhanced ‘UXP Turbo’ protocol with the advanced H.264 codec (requires vSpace Pro Enterprise version 12.9.1 or higher), offering improved compression, reduced bandwidth, and lower latency, making it ideal for:

• vSpace Server access over WAN or VPN,
• Applications requiring low network latency, such as CAD systems which need to  render and animate 3D objects.

• Support for the Enterprise Ethernet (802.1x) network security

• Supported authentication methods are: PEAP, TTLS, and TLS.
• Support for username and password-based authentication for PEAP and TTLS methods.
• Support for certificate-based authentication in the TLS method.

• Ability to bypass the HTTP proxy when establishing management connection to PMC Endpoint Manager (e.g., when deployed on-prem), while keep using the configured HTTP proxy for other network connections (e.g., connections through the Internet).

Enhancements introduced in L400 version 1.3.0: 

• New options in L400 vSpace Pro connection settings to enable/disable ‘UXP Turbo protocol’ and H.264 decoding capabilities. 
  These options provide the flexibility of being able to globally enable the H.264 encoding in vSpace Server (requiring higher CPU/GPU load), but to disable the H.264 support on selected clients when not required. 
• Enhanced vCAST components for improved compatibility and optimized performance with full HD video content in vSpace sessions.
• Improved video and audio synchronization of vCAST-ed contents.
• Support for additional touchscreen display models.

Issues resolved in L400 version 1.3.0:

• LFOUR-232 – Resolved issue of shifted GUI when changing display resolution on the fly from 2K to 1080P.
• LFOUR-230 – Resolved issue with incorrect display refresh frequency after changing the resolution from 1280x720 to 1920x1080.

About prevous release (version 1.2.35):

Enhancements introduced in L400 version 1.2.35: 

• Improved multi-touch screen support, enhancing both performance and sensitivity.
• Updated the vCAST Streaming software component.
• Improved the stability of vCAST Streaming.

Issues resolved in L400 version 1.2.35:

• LFOUR-219 - Resolved an issue where certain combo keys (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F2 to F11) may freeze the keyboard and mouse in the vSpace session.

About previous release (version 1.2.30):

Following are the enhancements in 1.2.30: 

• Improved mouse cursor clarity when displayed against a white background (e.g. spreadsheet cell).
• Added support for mice with back/forward buttons; requires vSpace Pro Enterprise version 12.8.0 or higher.
• Added support for Proton smart cards.
• Added support for client to retain last DHCP lease after power-off.

The following L400 issues have been fixed in version 1.2.30:

• LFOUR-190 - Addressed minor memory leak issues during extended use.
• LFOUR-202 - Resolved issue with firmware UI visibility after waking up from screen saver mode (with 'Disconnect sessions' action).
• LFOUR-209 - Resolved network icon not displayed issue when booting up without a connected ethernet cable.
• LFOUR-198 - Fixed automatic resolution detection issues on certain AOC monitors.
• LFOUR-195 - Resolved DHCP-based discovery issue of PMC server.

About previous release (version 1.2.22):

Following are the new product features introduced in L400 version 1.2.22

• Added support for remote screen shadowing via VNC and PMC Endpoint Manager. To enable this feature, go to Settings > Management > enable VNC screen shadowing.
• Integrated VPN clients support:

• Supported VPN clients include OpenVPN, OpenConnect, PPTP, IPSec (L2TP), IPSec (IKEv2), and FortiClient SSL VPN clients.
• To enable VPN Client, go to Settings > Networks > VPN > choose the VPN client.

• Integrated Audio Configuration utility for audio Input & output selections plus testing.

Following are the enhancements in 1.2.22: 

• Updated Linux kernel.
• Added a new ‘Security’ setting tab to upload CA, server certificate, or client certificate needed for VPN support.

The following L400 issues have been fixed in version 1.2.22:

• Addressed memory leak issues observed over an extended period of time which could potentially result in vSpace session disconnects or rare device freezes.
• LFOUR-160 – Resolved  the discrepancy in the  ‘screen saver timer’ value between vSpace Console and L400 devices.
• LFOUR-137 – Fixed the issue causing session black screens with a display resolution of 1680x1050 when using the UXP Turbo protocol.
• LFOUR-128 – Fixed the L400 local firmware UI crash issue when Ethernet cable is unplugged.

About previous release (version 1.1.0):

Following are the new product features introduced in L400 version 1.1.0 since the initial factory image of version 1.0.4:

• Support for single touch and multi-touch monitors

Following are the new improvements introduced in L400 version 1.1.0:

• Added support for ‘generic USB redirection’ for headsets with special control bottoms; default setting is based on ‘native USB redirection’ which works with vast majority of audio devices.
• Updated vCAST Streaming software components

Following are the new improvements introduced in L400 version 1.1.0:

• LFOUR-88 – Addressed the problem where the L400 device failed to display certain error messages returned by the vSpace Server (e.g. incorrect vSpace IP address), leading to an empty screen display.
• LFOUR-106- Fixed a graphic user interface (GUI) issue where the display size is incorrect after turning off/on the connected monitor.
• LFOUR-102 – Resolved the issue where the ESC key did not return to UI when vSpace returned certain error messages, causing the message to stay frozen
• LFOUR-98- Corrected the issue where the mouse pointer in the vSpace session turned black when the user moved it to the left edge of the screen.

Supported endpoint management systems

1. vSpace Console (available in vSpace Pro desktop virtualization)
   

Included in the vSpace Pro releases (LTS Edition with version 11.3.12 and higher, Enterprise Edition with version 12.7.4 and higher, Ads Edition with version 20.0.2 and higher), vSpace Console can manage the subset of L400 device settings which is related to vSpace connections. vSpace Console also provides integrated user session management for L400 devices (e.g. Multi-View, remote view, take over, message, stop/pause). 

1. PMC Endpoint Management (version 4.0.0 and higher)
   

Optional PMC Endpoint Manager software (vSpace Pro AMP compliancy required) can be used to manage L400 devices.

This L400 firmware version uses device configuration version 12.

L400 devices can be easily configured using PMC Endpoint management software. An admin can remotely manage L400 devices over local and wide-area networks, including locations behind firewalls and NAT-routers through an easy-to-use, web-based user interface. L400 devices can automatically discover PMC appliances, check-in, and receive the configuration. This greatly simplifies provisioning of new devices and makes the deployment easy. Administrators can set up complete device profiles with all necessary settings, then push the profile to individual or grouped devices. Only a few clicks are needed to schedule device firmware updates, access the summary dashboard, or view the detailed event logging. Users are always up-to-date with the latest technology.

Firmware Update Instructions:

The firmware update typically takes less than 5 minutes. Please do not turn off your device during this time. Once the firmware update is complete, the device will reboot automatically.  

• Updating firmware from an FTP or web server

The device firmware can be updated manually from the Setup GUI with a firmware update package uploaded to an FTP or web server:

• Upload the ‘L400-1.3.0.upd’ firmware update package file into your FTP or web server.
• On the L400 device, open the Setup GUI and go to the Support section.
• Enter the FTP or HTTP URL of the firmware update package and click the [Update] button.
• Alternatively, user can use the following NComputing’s web URL to download and install this version of firmware directly to the L400 device:

Once the device finishes downloading the firmware update package, the firmware update process will start and will take a minute or two. The process should not be interrupted. Firmware update will end with a device reboot.

• Updating firmware from vSpace Console

The device firmware can be updated from the vSpace Console included in vSpace Pro LTS, vSpace Pro Enterprise Edition, or vSpace Pro Ads Edition. 

The following manual steps need to be performed before updating the L400 firmware from vSpace Console:

1. Open the l400-update.txt file (obtained from the downloaded L400 software zip folder) to ensure the firmware versioning stated in the file matches the firmware to which you want L400 to update to. An example of this l400-update.txt file is shown below:

2. Upload both the L400 firmware update software image (e.g. L400-1.3.0.upd) and l400-update.txt file to the following folder on the vSpace Server host machine:

C:\Program Files\NComputing\vSpace Server Software\Bootsrv

It would look something like the example below:

Once the above steps have been performed, L400 firmware update is now possible. To upgrade the firmware, open vSpace Console and follow the standard firmware update procedure. For devices located in the same LAN as vSpace Pro, it is as following:

• Go to Manage Devices.
• Under Networks select LAN, locate and select the L400 devices which should receive the firmware update.
• Click the Update Firmware button on the toolbar.
• Select the Latest from LAN method and click the [Update] button.

Once the device finishes downloading the firmware update package, the firmware update process will start and will take a few minutes. The process should not be interrupted. Firmware update will end with a device reboot.

• Updating firmware from PMC Endpoint Manager

The L400 device requires a separate purchase of either AMP for vSpace Pro  or AMP for VERDE VDI to receive the PMC software license for that device.

Once PMC is registered to NComputing Management Portal, it will auto-detect the PMC licensing allowance for RX300, RX300+ and L400 devices that have been connected to PMC.

The device firmware can be updated from a supported version of PMC. Follow the below steps to perform the firmware update on remote L400 devices:

• Logon to PMC as a user with administrative privileges, open the Menu, go to ‘Administration > Files’.
• Select ‘Firmware Image’ as file type.
• Click the ‘Choose file’ button and select the ‘L400-1.3.0.upd’ file.
• Click the ‘Upload file’ button to upload the firmware package.
• In PMC 4.0.0 or newer version:

• Open the Menu, go to ‘Devices’.
• Select the devices which should receive the firmware update.
• Execute the ‘Update Firmware’ task of the Devices list.
• Select the ‘L400-1.3.0.upd’ firmware package.

• Schedule the update date and time or opt to update now.
• Click the ‘Apply’ button.

If ‘Update now’ was chosen, then within 30 seconds the selected devices will receive the requests to initiate the firmware update. The process can be followed by observing the Audit Events log on Dashboard. The firmware update process will take a minute or two and should not be interrupted. Firmware update will end with a device reboot.

Additional notes: 

• Managing L400 devices from PMC

The L400 device can be optionally managed by the PMC Endpoint Manager version 4.0.0 (or newer). This software can be obtained as a benefit of separate vSpace Pro AMP or VERDE AMP licenses.

• Managing the L400 devices with 1.3.0 firmware from PMC

The L400 1.3.0 firmware uses version 12 of the device configuration. To ensure smooth transition and uninterrupted management ability, NComputing suggests updating PMC to version 4.0.0 (or newer) before upgrading the device firmware. Please refer to PMC 4.0.0 Release Notes for the information about PMC updating. To add to PMC the support for L400 devices using configuration version 12, an appropriate PCU file (PMC Configuration Update file) needs to be uploaded to PMC. The necessary PCU file will be distributed together with the L400 firmware.

• PMC server auto-discovery

To automate the PMC server discovery the DHCP option 207 can be used. This DHCP option should provide a string value containing the URL in form of ‘https://<PMC_address>’, like: ‘https://pmc.company.local’, or: ‘https://192.168.10.12’.

• Using PMC 4.0.0 (or newer) for L400 device screen shadowing

The software components allowing device screen shadowing from PMC act as yet another VNC viewer application. The VNC screen shadowing feature needs to be enabled on the devices for the PMC screen shadowing feature to work.

• Passcode-based PMC 4.0.0 (or newer) device onboarding

When the ‘Require passcode for device onboarding’ option is activated under System Settings of PMC 4.0.0, then newly connecting devices will prompt the users to provide the onboarding passcode. Only if the user will provide correct onboarding passcode the device will successfully check-in and will be added to PMC’s database. This is a one-time process only. Already onboarded devices will never prompt users for any onboarding passcode.

• Authentication methods supported by the VPN clients added in 1.2.22 and newer firmware:

• OpenVPN client – username with password, client certificate with password, and .ovpn file.
• OpenConnect VPN client – username with password, client certificate with password.
• PPTP – username with password.
• FortiClient SSL VPN client – username with password.
• IPSec:

• L2TP/IPsec VPN – pre-shared key, username with password.
• IKEv2/IPsec VPN client – client certificate with password.

• Using the network test tools

The results of network tests will be saved into a temporary file, which will be collected when creating a Troubleshooting File. The device will also execute the network tests when creating the Troubleshooting File on PMC administrator’s request. Appropriate test parameters (address and port) should be configured on the device before requesting the Troubleshooting File with PMC.

• Touchscreen support

Single touch or multi-touchscreen monitors are supported.

• Native (functional) redirection of webcams in vSpace Client sessions

vSpace Pro Enterprise Edition supports the native webcam redirection functionality from L400. Each user, under Privacy settings, needs to allow the applications to access the redirected camera.

• Native (functional) redirection of smart card readers in UXP sessions

vSpace Pro Enterprise Edition supports the functional redirection of smart card readers leverages the PC/SC daemon and smart card reader drives embedded in the device firmware. Please refer to Appendix A for the list of smart card reader drivers contained in L400 firmware.
