Is it okay to shutdown an RX-series thin client by unplugging the power cord or power strip? No!

No. The RX-series thin clients are based on Raspberry Pi devices. By unplugging the power cord or power strip to shut it down, it can cause a variety of issues including corruption of the microSD card and file system.

It is important that your RX-series device get a clean shutdown. There are two easy ways to perform a clean shutdown to these devices:

  1. Software shutdown. Each RX-series thin client comes with a software shutdown menu as seen below. By selecting the ‘shutdown’ option, it will gracefully shutdown the device.

  1. Hardware shutdown: Perform a hardware shutdown by pressing the integrated power button. In this case, press and hold the power button continuously for more than 7 seconds (similar to a smartphone), it will gracefully shutdown the device.

The activity LED should flash 3 or 4 times just before powering off. It is then safe to remove the power cord.

Important note

Improper use of RX-series devices by unplugging the power cord or power strip (i.e. without graceful shutdown) may result in microSD card/file system corruption and result in a voided warranty. It is imperative to follow the proper graceful shutdown procedure for the RX-series thin clients.
