How to Revoke LEAFOS Licensing in PMC

How to Revoke LEAFOS Licensing in PMC

Overview

This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to revoke and transfer LEAF OS licenses using the NComputing PMC Endpoint Manager.

Whether you are decommissioning old hardware, replacing a faulty device, or managing a lost/stolen endpoint, the PMC Endpoint Manager allows you to return active licenses to your organization's license pool for reuse.

How the Revocation Process Works

According to the PMC Release Notes, the license revocation feature operates as follows:

"For LEAF OS devices which are no longer in use, it is possible to revoke the licenses (which effectively de-activates the device). The revoked licenses are returned to the license pool associated with the license key originally used for device activation and can be re-used to activate other LEAF OS devices."

Key Operational Rules:

  1. Same Account Constraint: The entire revocation and reassignment process must occur within the same NComputing Management Portal (MP) account. Licenses cannot be transferred to a different organization or a different MP account.
  2. No Expiration Extension: Revoking and transferring a license does not alter or extend its original expiration date. The license term remains tied to the original activation date.

Step-by-Step: How to Revoke a License in PMC

Follow these steps to revoke a license from an inactive device and return it to your license pool:
  1. Navigate to Devices: Open the PMC Endpoint Manager and select the Devices tab from the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Select the Target Group: In the directory tree, select the subnet or group where the target device is located (e.g., 'Germany' subnet group).
  3. Select the Device: Locate the device in the DEVICES list and check the box next to its entry.
  4. Execute Revocation: In the Tasks menu above the device list, click Revoke License to deactivate the device and return the license to your pool.

Special Revocation Triggers & Parameters

1. "Lost" or Stolen Device Trigger

Per the PMC Release Notes, marking a device as "Lost" (stolen) automatically triggers the following sequence:

  • Automatic Revocation: The LEAF OS license is immediately revoked and returned to the license pool.
  • Device Lockdown: If the device is online or next connects to PMC, it receives a command to reset to factory defaults, lock the user interface, and block all operability.
  • Recovery: If the device is recovered, it can be unlocked via the PMC interface. However, it will require a reboot and active internet connectivity to contact the Management Portal, verify its "found" status, and restore normal operation.

2. Terms of Service Violations

Per the LEAFOS Terms of Service:

  • A device license is automatically revoked if the customer violates the acceptable use policies or terms of service.
  • NComputing reserves the right to suspend or terminate products and services at any time, with or without cause, and without prior notice.

Perpetual License Transfer Policy (Updated April 2026)

For customers utilizing LeafOS Perpetual (LeafOS-P) licenses, NComputing updated its transfer policy in April 2026 to provide greater flexibility while maintaining compliance.

The 3-Year Rule & The "AMP Compliance" Relaxation

Historically, transferring a perpetual license to another device after 3 years of the original activation date was restricted. Under the updated LeafOS Perpetual License Transfer Policy, this restriction is relaxed under the following conditions:

  1. Active TAM Contract: Customers with an active Technical Account Manager (TAM) contract remain eligible to transfer perpetual licenses after 3 years, and must be AMP compliant.
  2. Device AMP Compliance Rule: Enterprise customers without a TAM contract can still transfer perpetual licenses via PMC after 3 years, provided their entire site is Device AMP compliant.
    • Compliance Definition: All registered NComputing devices (RX, EX, and LEAF OS) within the organization's MP account must have active, non-expired Annual Maintenance Support (AMP) coverage.
    • Retroactive Catch-up: If any devices have expired AMP, the customer must retroactively pay to renew coverage for those devices to restore site-wide compliance and re-enable PMC transfers.

General Transfer Requirements

Regardless of device age, all license transfers must meet these baseline requirements:

  • Management Portal (MP) Account: The customer must have a registered MP account. Manual activation codes used without an MP account do not support transfers.
  • PMC Usage: Transfers must be managed automatically via the PMC Endpoint Manager.
  • Manual Support Fee: If a customer does not use PMC and requests manual transfer assistance from NComputing Support via a ticket, a Pay-Per-Incident (PPI) fee of $49 will apply.
  • No Resale: Licenses belong strictly to the original purchasing organization and cannot be resold or transferred to a different MP account. Attempting to do so will be flagged as abuse and may result in account suspension.
